Studying in Sweden: the new 15-hour work rule and the road to a work permit
Last verified July 2, 2026
The student route just changed — most advice hasn't caught up.
For years, Sweden was unusual: student residence permits came with no formal limit on working hours. That ended in June 2026. Students whose permits are granted on or after June 11, 2026 at bachelor's or master's level may work at most 15 hours per week, with defined exceptions.
At the same time, the student route remains one of the most reliable paths into the Swedish labour market: graduates can stay a year to look for work, and can apply for a work permit from inside Sweden.
This guide covers the permit requirements with 2026 amounts, exactly how the new work limit works, and the two exits — the job-seeking year and the work permit switch.
Quick summary
- Maintenance requirement 2026: SEK 10,656 per month, shown for the permit period. Add SEK 4,440/month for a partner and SEK 2,664/month per child.
- You must be finally admitted to full-time studies — and where tuition applies, you count as finally admitted only once the fee is paid.
- New rule: permits granted on or after June 11, 2026 (bachelor's/master's) allow a maximum of 15 hours of work per week — with exceptions for internships that are part of the programme, certain university work, and June–August.
- Breaking the 15-hour limit can cost you the permit: it may be withdrawn.
- After a programme of at least two semesters, you can get a permit to stay and look for work: up to 12 months (12–18 for doctoral graduates).
- Graduates of at least two semesters of Swedish higher education can apply for a work permit from inside Sweden — no need to leave.
The student permit: requirements and 2026 amounts
The residence permit for higher-education studies requires final admission to full-time studies — 30 credits per semester at a university, or at least 20 teaching hours per week at other institutions. Distance programmes do not qualify. If you pay tuition fees, you are considered finally admitted only after the fee is paid, which in practice sets the earliest date you can file a complete application.
The money requirement for 2026 is SEK 10,656 per month for the permit period, shown through bank statements, scholarships, or salary — with a statement issued no more than four months before the permit start. Family members add SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or partner and SEK 2,664 per child. If the institution provides free housing or food, the requirement drops by SEK 4,736 and SEK 2,960 respectively.
Insurance follows stay length: under one year requires comprehensive health insurance, while stays of a year or more lead to population registration and ordinary public healthcare. The application fee is SEK 1,500 (children SEK 750), and as a general rule you apply from outside Sweden.
The 15-hour rule: who it hits and the exceptions
The June 2026 reform draws a clean line. If your bachelor's or master's level permit was granted on or after June 11, 2026, you may work a maximum of 15 hours per week alongside your studies. Permits granted before that date are not subject to the stated cap — which means two students in the same seminar can be under different rules until older permits cycle out.
The exceptions matter as much as the rule. Work above 15 hours is allowed when it:
There is also a bridge for graduates: if you have completed higher education equivalent to at least two semesters and are not applying for a new study permit below doctoral level, you may work more than 15 hours per week during your permit's remaining validity. And the enforcement is real — a permit can be withdrawn for exceeding the limit, which turns a side job into a residence risk.
- is part of your education, such as an internship within the programme
- involves student representation, administration, or research at your institution
- involves artistic research at the institution
- takes place during June, July, or August
Exit one: the job-seeking year after graduation
After completing a higher-education programme of at least two semesters — bachelor's, master's, or doctoral — you can apply for a residence permit to stay and look for work or explore starting a business. Bachelor's and master's graduates can get up to 12 months; doctoral graduates between 12 and 18 months.
The requirements mirror the student permit: SEK 10,656 per month in shown funds (2026), comprehensive health insurance where the total stay is under a year, and — critically — the application must be submitted before your current study permit expires. You apply from inside Sweden, and the fee is SEK 1,500.
One planning note: current statistics put this permit at around seven months' processing for 75% of cases. You may stay in Sweden while it is decided, but plan your funds evidence for the full applied-for period.
Exit two: switching straight to a work permit
Students who complete at least two semesters of Swedish higher education hold a valuable exception: they can apply for a work permit from inside Sweden, skipping the main rule that first-time work permits are filed from abroad.
The work permit itself follows the standard 2026 requirements — the SEK 34,470 salary threshold, a contract signed by both parties, the employer's advertising and union steps, and insurance. For new graduates the pressure point is usually salary: entry-level offers in some fields sit near or below the threshold, which makes the exact offer decisive.

Sequencing the final year: a decision timeline
The strongest student-to-work transitions are planned about twelve months before graduation. A workable sequence:
The common thread: every one of these steps has a deadline set by someone else — the permit expiry, the tuition payment date, the employer's process. Students who map the deadlines once, early, rarely need emergency options later.
- autumn of final year: confirm your permit's expiry date and whether your programme qualifies you for the after-studies permit (two-semester minimum)
- 6 months out: target employers whose roles clear SEK 34,470 comfortably; below-threshold offers burn the inside-Sweden advantage
- 3 months out: decide the track — job offer in hand means work permit application; no offer yet means preparing the job-seeking permit with funds evidence
- before permit expiry: file the chosen application from inside Sweden — filing after expiry forfeits the right to wait out the decision in Sweden
- during any 15-hour-capped period: document that side work stays within the cap or under an exception; a withdrawn student permit erases both exits
Funds evidence that passes the first screening
Student-route refusals and delays cluster around money documentation rather than academics. The bank statement must be recent (issued within four months of the intended permit start), in your name, and cover the full amount for the applied period — for a 10-month academic year in 2026, that is SEK 106,560 in one place at one time.
Recurring problems: funds split across accounts and currencies without a clear total, balances that spike just before the statement date, third-party money without a documented scholarship or sponsor structure, and partner or child amounts forgotten entirely when family applies along. Each triggers questions, and questions cost weeks.
The clean pattern is boring: one account, one statement, full amount, stable for a period before issuance, plus scholarship letters where relevant. Boring files get decided fast.
